If you know my husband, you'll know that he's a huge coffee snob. Wherever we go, we'll try local coffee shops. It's one of the first things we'll look for when we travel somewhere new. Over the years, these coffee shops have held so many memories for us. One year, we spent New Year's Eve at Deep Creek Coffee in Utah, where on a chilly winter morning, the barista asked Keith to step in to help out with the morning rush. We spent those nights watching the stars and talking about getting engaged. For our proposal, Keith planned a scavenger hunt, and one of the stops was a place that sold Heart Coffee, a reminder of our trip to Oregon that made us want to move to the Pacific Northwest. We took some of our engagement photos at Flywheel Coffee in San Francisco, which was just one of the many coffee shops we frequented over the years. So after all these years, we wanted a way to share those stories, the places we went, and the people we met. When we looked online for ideas, we didn't find any designs that really fit what we were looking for, so we decided to create our own! Check out this DIY tutorial on framing and displaying your coffee bag collection.

Note: Sadly, we hadn't actually kept all the coffee bags in the chaos of our house remodel, so we began by reaching out to coffee roasters we had been to. A huge shoutout to these coffee roasters who so kindly and generously sent us a bag (all of which have awesome coffee of course, if you're looking for recommendations!)
  • Sightglass Coffee | San Francisco, CA
  • Blue Bottle Coffee | San Francisco, CA
  • Equator Coffee | Mill Valley, CA
  • Temple Coffee Roasters | Sacramento, CA
  • Dark Horse Coffee | Truckee, CA
  • Coava Coffee Roasters | Portland, OR
  • Solberg & Hansen | Norway
  • Square Mile | London
  • Many Worlds Tavern

And a shoutout to these local roasters, who we already had bags from since they're near us!
  • Captain + Stoker | Monterey, CA
  • Cat & Cloud | Santa Cruz, CA
  • Verve Coffee Roasters | Santa Cruz, CA
  • Ritual Coffee | San Francisco, CA

Materials

  • Empty coffee bags
  • 24" x 36" Matboard
  • Logan Mat Cutter
  • Frame of your choice (we used the IKEA Lomviken Frame)

Instructions

  1. Map out the size and position of where you want your coffee bags to be displayed on the back of the matboard. We measured out 7 rows of 5 squares each for a total of 35 slots for coffee bags. Each square was 3" x 3", with 1.5" between each square. The top and bottom margin had 3" each. Draw these lines on the back of your matboard.
  2. Cut out each square using the mat cutter. Tip: Before cutting, practice on another piece of board. Watch the video here on how to use the mat cutter.
  3. Cut a piece of each coffee bag just slightly larger than your cutout. We cut out each piece strategically to display the logo if possible. Tape each piece behind the matboard.
  4. When done, place the matboard into the frame. Add new bags as you go!
